Mersey Band Concert with the Mersey Swing Band

Tuesday, June 23 7:00pm
Astor Theater, Free admission
Reception to follow in the Former Town Hall

Mersey Band Concert “All Sorts, Shapes, Sizes and Colors” The Mersey Band, under the direction of Rod MacGillivray is looking forward to presenting its Spring concert entitled “All Sorts, Shapes, Sizes, and Colours” at Zion United Church, Liverpool, on Friday, May 29th at 7 pm. The band will perform a wide-ranging repertoire ranging from a powerful overture to energetic marches, classics, and ballads, including a new work for band celebrating the important Canadian cultural history of the St. Lawrence River. The concert takes its theme from the title in two ways. First, from the number of contrasting compositions that explore the infinite variety and diversity that make up the world of concert band music and second, from the variety of musical groups performing in the concert. In addition to the concert band, the Mersey Swing Band will also be performing, playing a wide variety of styles from Swing to Funk to Rock arrangements. New this year will be performances by two of our chamber ensembles including a brass quintet and woodwind ensemble performing everything from Mozart to Broadway. The Mersey Band is grateful for the Positive Aging Grant it received from the Department of Seniors which facilitated the establishment of small ensembles. Concert admission is by free-will donation. Proceeds will go towards maintenance of Mersey Band instrumental instruction programs. The training sessions include a summer band camp and subsidized year-round private instrumental lessons. Anyone interested in joining the Mersey Band or an ensemble should contact Frances Yeske at 354-3226 or Rod MacGillvray at 902-541-7341 New members are always welcome! The band rehearses Tuesday evenings at the Milton Community Hall starting at 7 p.m. Ensembles rehearse at various times.

The Band usually performs one big theme concert in the spring or fall.  Previous concert themes have included: “That’s A Hundred , music from the 20’s and 80’s”; “Rhythm, Colors and Flavors of the World”;  Golden Brass and other Shiny Things”

Mersey Youth Project Initiative

The Mersey Band is pleased to have worked in partnership with the province of Nova Scotia ( Cultural and Youth Activities Program) ) to give youth an opportunity to to be introduced to the joys of instrumental band music.  A grant enabled students to participate in week long band camps as well as enjoy subsidized music lessons.  Beginner students learned the rudiments of their instrument, how to read music and to play some simple pieces.   Intermediate and advanced students honed their skills and were introduced to different styles of music.  Eleven students are currently in the Mersey Band.  The Mersey Band plans to offer another Summer Band Camp in August.

“Positive Aging” Initiatives
The Mersey Band has undertaken two major initiatives for seniors which contribute to their health, self-esteem and vitality.
The Mersey Swing Band which meets twice a month on Sundays to play old swing standards.  The Swing Band is also a multi-generational group with varying skills and experiences.  The Swing Band livens up concerts, dinners and dances.
Small Group Ensembles –a 2014 initiative sponsored by the Department of Seniors and the Mersey Band.    Ensembles will include a sax ensemble, a woodwind ensemble, a Dixieland Combo, and smaller groups such as flute and clarinet, keyboard and flute and perhaps a brass ensemble.
These initiatives give members:
- opportunities to practice and to learn new skills through in a friendly relaxed atmosphere
- opportunities to play different styles of music- jazz, classical, Dixieland, chamber
- opportunities to perform for different audiences at different venues.  Having small groups gives the Band many more opportunities to participate in local events
- opportunities to share skills mentoring newer members and youth.  The groups are meant to be intergenerational
- opportunities to socialize and have fun
The Band is implementing a recruitment program targeting seniors who previously played an instrument, newcomers to the area, newly retired seniors and youth.
The band offers a training program with subsidized lessons with music and instruments provided.
